There are four specific situations that Department employees may be involved in that generate a mandated referral to BSS. A mandated referral is just that, an act has taken place and Department policy mandates that the employee be directed to BSS for assistance. These are Categorical Uses of Force including Officer Involved Shootings, Bloodborne Pathogen Exposure, and Military Deployment. These appointments are arranged by your Commanding Officer and are conducted on-duty.
The purpose of a mandated referral is to provide employees an opportunity to psychologically debrief a situation that may have the potential to be upsetting or traumatizing. While the majority of employees do not have difficulty with these situations, there is no easy way to predict who will experience problems so the widely accepted approach is to have all involved employees meet with a psychologist.
